On the first sunny, dry race-day in weeks, Bothell High School senior Charlie Barringer finished second at the 4A Washington State Championships meet on Saturday in Pasco, Wash. The Northshore area represented well, as Jackson High School’s Aaron Roe won the 4A race.
Barringer’s record-breaking time of 15-minutes, 22-seconds shattered the 19-year-old Bothell record of 15:39, set by Jason Fryberg in 1995. And Barringer’s second-place finish at his third State meet qualified him for his third straight Border Clash – a Nike-sponsored exhibition race between the top 40 high school runners in Washington and the top 40 in Oregon. Border Clash 2014 will be held in Beaverton, Ore., on Nov. 23.
“Having all my teammates with me competing for Bothell together was really great,” Barringer said. “Casey and our other coaches helped me peak at the perfect time, because I felt great in the race. To set my personal best and the Bothell record at State was awesome. Now I’m looking forward to scoring and helping Washington run well at Border Clash.”
In Pasco, Barringer led a Bothell team of three freshman, two juniors and two seniors. As a team Bothell finished 14th overall during the meet.
Juniors Cameron Howard and Alex Nienaber finished second and third out of the Bothell runners. Howard finished 73rd overall (16:38) and Nienaber was 97th (16:560). Freshman Zach Chupik was Bothell’s fourth finisher, placing 107th (17:07), followed by senior Jake Fillman in 120th place (17:17) and freshmen Brandon Simmons (122nd- 17:20) and Shane Barringer (135th – 17:32).
Saturday marked the Cougar boys first trip to state since 2008 and the first time coach Casey Kellogg has taken a team to state.
“I could not be more proud of the way these guys trained and came together as a team this year,” Kellogg said. “We’re a young team, and while we will lose Charlie and Jake next year, we have a talented, motivated group behind them ready to step in and compete in 2015.”
NCAA early signing week begins Nov. 12 for cross country and track athletes.
Barringer said he intends to make a decision among the schools most actively recruiting him, which include three of the nation’s top 15 cross country teams – University of Washington, University of Colorado and University of Portland, as well as University of California-Berkeley.
