Bothell’s Jeffrey Goong finishes 5th in state diving finals | 4A Swim and Dive roundup

Jeffrey Goong

Bothell High senior Jeffrey Goong fell short of his second-consecutive state diving title on Saturday at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. Goong, who made his third appearance at the Class 4A state championships, finished fifth overall.

Goong finished first at the KingCo championships and at the 4A District championships, and scored 384.6 points in the state finals on Feb. 20. Goong improved on his score from last winter, when he won the event with 379.15 points.

South Kitsap senior Jason Gleason won the 2017 Class 4A diving title with 474.20 points in the finals.

Goong said he doesn’t plan to pursue diving in college, as he hopes to attend school close to home. There aren’t any diving teams at Washington state universities.

Three Bothell High swimmers qualified for the finals of the 100-yard breaststroke on Feb. 20. Sophomore Brandon Stride finished eighth overall in 59.36 seconds. Senior Corey Stride was 11th in 59.54 seconds and sophomore Cameron Birrell finished 16th in 1:00.83.

Brandon Stride made finals in the 200 individual medley as well, placing 10th overall. Corey Stride made finals in the 200 freestyle, placing 13th.

The Bothell 200 medley relay team, which included both Stride brothers, Birrell and Brandon Troung, finished 19th in prelims and missed finals.

Camas High won the event with 302 points. Skyline was second with 206 and Issaquah third with 197. Bothell placed 17th with 43 points.
