Skyview Junior High’s Sarah Stavig, a 14-year-old who will be entering ninth grade, medaled last weekend in the long jump at the AAU-sanctioned Junior Olympic Games in New Orleans, La., jumping 17 feet, 3 inches in the finals to place seventh in the nation.
During the school year, Stavig won the 100, 200, 400 and 4×100 meter races this year at the Northshore District Championships, with best times of 12.6 seconds (100 meters) and 25.9 (200 meters).
Also at the Junior Olympics, Bothell’s Matt Moran, who goes to Canyon Park Junior High, put on another strong showing in the long jump, achieving a personal best of 21-5.5 to place second behind national champion James Liburd, whose jump of 22-3.5 was a new national record. Moran also placed seventh in the 200 meters with another personal record of 23.19.
Stavig and Moran both train under Mike Cunliffe at Seattle Speed and are on the club’s Elite Track team.
