Cedar Park Christian finishes summer football season at Cougar Passing Challenge

The Cedar Park Christian football program ended its summer season at the 3rd Annual Cougar Passing Challenge at Lakewood High July 31.

Cedar Park played four games, finishing 1-3 and just one spot outside of the playoff window.

“It was tough for us to have that happen, but we got a good feel of where we are as a football team going into August,” Coach Craig Shetterly said. “Our kids played tough, played right and did some real impressive things out there.”

One of the most impressive was a winning touchdown catch from senior tailback Zach Dinsmore on the last play of the game against Eastside Catholic. On that play, quarterback Justin Girgus rolled left, set and threw back to his right, and watched Dinsmore leap over two defenders to grab the TD. Cedar Park won, 38-31.

“One of the coaches from another team came up and told me he was one of the most athletic kids he saw out here. He’s a special football player,” Shetterly said.

Girgus tossed 19 TDs in those four games, 11 to Dinsmore and six to Riley O’Regan, a senior wide receiver. Dinsmore had three interceptions, and the Cedar Park offense rolled up scores of 38, 42 and 43 in three of its four games. The other touchdown catches came from Steve Hunsaker (two) and Josh Ionesi (one).

“Our kids can score in bunches. It’s a testament to their work. The other coaches on staff and the kids have poured their hearts into focusing on humility, hard work and playing for the other 10 on the field,” Shetterly said.
