Cedar Park girls regrouping, rebuilding this season

Thanks to a large senior class last season and a handful of unexpected absences, Cedar Park Christian girls basketball coach Todd Lundberg is essentially working with a clean slate this winter.

“We graduated most of our scoring, and we had some volleyball girls who decided to focus on volleyball, so we don’t have much returning depth,” said Lundberg, who is entering his fifth full season at the helm. “A sophomore and a freshman that are probably going to carry a lot of the scoring for us.”

The Eagles have five seniors on varsity, including three who have experience in the program.

Eden Fox, Amandalyn Boersema and Natalie Luxem are senior guards. Maddie Cunningham and Sara Henson are listed as post players.

KK Boersema and Kaitlin Carlson are juniors. Sela Flynn is a sophomore and Irena Korolenko is a freshman.

Despite a lack of experienced players, Lundberg doesn’t plan to run.

“We’ll try to keep other teams from scoring 40 points, and then we’ll always be in the game,” Lundberg said. “Then we’ve got to find out how to score more than 40. We’re not really going to be up-and-down, we’ll probably do our scoring in the half court.”

The formula has been accurate through the first few games. Cedar Park held opponents under 25 in the first two games and won both, but allowed 50 points in losses to Bellevue Christian and Cedarcrest.

The Eagles compete in a hybrid league, but battle for one of three seeds to the Class 1A postseason.

“I think the pressure is off, honestly,” Lundberg said. “King’s and Archbishop Murphy are the perrenial powers in our league and probably will be again. Between us and Sultan and South Whidbey, we’ll scrap with them for the second and third seed at district.”

Cedar Park is scheduled to play Sultan at 5:15 p.m. on Dec. 9 at home.
