Injuries pile up as Bothell blows by Snohomish in QFC Classic opener

The bench was already littered with starters by the time Bothell High boys’ basketball coach Ron Bollinger pulled Da’Vicious Wilson in preparation for the next day’s game.

The Cougars were already well on their way to a 71-47 victory over Snohomish in their first game at the QFC Holiday Classic at Bothell High School. Cameron Tyson and Wilson sat next to senior guard Isaiah Clark, and alongside injured seniors Daniel Johnson and Josh Kollman.

Jake Medjo, the team’s starting post, was in the locker room getting stitches in his chin after taking a hard fall and landing on his face in the third quarter.

Medjo went to have x-rays taken of his chin after the game. Johnson (knee) and Kollman (back) are out for the remainder of the tournament, and Bollinger said Medjo is doubtful to return for games on Dec. 29 and Dec. 30.

The injuries heap a weight on Tyson’s shoulders after leading the team with 27 points in the win over Snohomish.

“He’s going to have to step up, and the other guys are going to have to make good basketball plays,” Bollinger said. “If they can do that, then we can get through this next game against Juanita [tomorrow].”

Bothell (8-0) beat Juanita in the season opener in November behind 27 from Kollman and 16 from Medjo. Juanita post Ravi Regan-Hughes led the Rebels with 17 points against Bothell, and scored 30 as Juanita beat Kamiak, 59-56, on Dec. 28 in the first round.

“Without [Medjo], [Juanita’s] big lefty is going to be a big match up for us,” Bollinger said. “We’ve just got to execute, which is a good thing for us to have to do.”

“In this game, with the guys that are out, we’ll need to be more basketball than athlete. In the other games, we’ve been more athlete for basketball,” he said.

Junior wing Jordan Potts scored 13 points and Medjo added 11 points in the win over Snohomish. Panther junior Darius Johnson led Snohomish with 23 points.

Juanita and Bothell are scheduled to play at 7 p.m. on Dec. 29. The winner moves on to the tournament championship game, set for 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 30.
