Sage Speak, 12, from Moorlands Elementary in Kenmore left the other swimmers in her wake at the King County Aquatic Center during the annual PAC Coast Invitational meet. The sixth-grader took first place in the 100-meter breaststroke event out of 50 competitors and placed in the top five in all but one event she entered.
“Sage is an extremely hard-working and focused swimmer willing to put in the hours necessary to reach her goals,” said Robin Burn, a parent volunteer and spokesperson for WAVE Aquatics. “Her practice habits and dedication are that of a much older swimmer.”
Speak is just one or two seconds off qualifying times that would allow her to represent Pacific Northwest Swimming in Gresham, Ore., in August.
Inglemoor High’s Megan Caylor, coming off an injury, narrowly missed an Olympic Trial qualifying time in the backstroke by less than a second. She will have her next try at the mark during the SuperSoaker event June 14 at the King County Aquatic Center.
