Northshore athletes were off to the races in 2009 / Year in Review

2009 local sports highlights included (and pictured):

• Northshore Junior High 12-year-old Alexis Hungerford blazed to first place in the 800-meter run in August at the Hershey Track and Field Games North American Final in Pennsylvania. In a thrilling race, she passed three runners and then caught the leader near the finish line in a personal-best 2 minutes, 25.85 seconds.

• Inglemoor High’s Anthony Arena fell to the turf after completing the boys 4×400 relay at the 4A state track-and-field championships in May at Mount Tahoma High in Tacoma. The Viking relay — also featuring Paul Ena, Zach Pattison and Austin Terry — took a close second in 3:20.77 to Wenatchee’s 3:19.36.

• Bothell High’s Evan Hudson roared up field during the Cougars’ 31-26 semifinal loss to Skyline High in the 4A state semifinals in November at the Tacoma Dome. Bothell (12-1) was ranked No. 1 in the state at the time. Bothell defeated Skyline earlier in the season, 25-20, to claim the 4A Kingco title.

• Bothell’s Sarah Nagashima led her University of Arkansas gymnastics team to a fifth-place finish at the NCAA championships in April. Individually, she tied for third on the balance beam (9.90) and earned first-team All-American honors. Arkansas will compete Feb. 26 at the University of Washington.
