The Bothell Cougars’ baseball team got yet another outstanding start from senior Brian McAfee on a rainy Monday night at home, as the Cornell-bound pitcher shut out Garfield through five innings in a 1-0 win while striking out five.
McAfee was locked in a pitchers’ duel with Bulldog ace John Trupin, who was tagged with the tough-luck loss after giving up a first-inning RBI double to McAfee.
Henry Baillargeon came on in relief to earn the save for the Cougars, who finished the regular season at 13-2 in league play and 16-4 overall, with McAfee’s season ERA lowering to 0.43.
The Cougars will kick off the 4A Kingco Tournament on Saturday at Woodinville High School against Issaquah (6-7), the No. 4 team from the Crest Division.
Vikings walk-off against Roosevelt
In their final regular-season game of the year, the Inglemoor Vikings ended on a good note with a thrilling 5-4 4A Kingco baseball victory over the Roosevelt Roughriders at Inglemoor High School.
The Vikings took a 2-0 lead on aggressive base running and wild pitches, and later in the fifth Tyler Beahan scored Conner Savage on a sacrifice fly that turned out to be a big insurance run, as Roosevelt rallied for three game-tying runs in the top of the seventh.
In the bottom of the inning, with the bases loaded and two outs, senior Obadiah Taylor came up big, smashing a 1-1 pitch into left center for the game-winner.
The Vikings, winners of seven of their last nine, will take on the No. 2 seed from the Crest Division, Redmond (11-3) on Saturday in the first round of the 4A Kingco Tournament, at 10 a.m. at Woodinville High School.
Inglemoor outslugs Redmond in the rain
In a 4A Kingco fastpitch game played on a wet Monday afternoon, the Inglemoor Vikings and Redmond Mustangs dueled to a 16-10 Inglemoor victory at Hartman Park.
Viking junior Taylor Peacocke starred for the visiting squad, going 3-for-3 with a home run and three runs scored, with Holly Sandborg also blasting a long ball as part of a three-RBI night.
For the Mustangs, Chelsea Rakonza went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Natalie Roberts checked in with two hits including a double, and Christine Ho finished 2-for-3.
With the win, Inglemoor improved to .500 on the league season at 5-5 (6-9 overall).
The Vikings played on Wednesday against Garfield after the Reporter’s deadline.
Cougars fall to Redmond in crossover match
In a 4A Kingco fastpitch crossover matchup with the Redmond Mustangs from the Crest Division, the Bothell Cougars fell behind early and came up short 13-7 at home last Friday afternoon.
Redmond scored eight runs in the first two innings, with the Cougars responding with five of their own, but the Mustangs’ hot bats scored twice more in the fourth and sixth innings to put the game out of reach.
For Bothell, Arista Honey led the offense with a home run and three RBIs, followed by Sammy Morris with a triple and two runs scored.
With the loss, the Cougars fell to 4-5 in league play and 7-8 overall. They played again Wednesday night at home against Roosevelt at home after the Reporter’s deadline, with another league game tonight against the rival Vikings, first pitch at 6:30 p.m.
Inglemoor tennis beats Bothell
The Viking girls’ tennis team swept in doubles action en route to a 5-2 4A Kingco tennis won on Tuesday afternoon.
In singles, No. 1 Jasmine Singh swept Rebekah You 6-0, 6-0, and No. 3 Leanne Thim came from behind to beat Linda Vinitnantharat 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles, Audrey Wu and Hannah Talmage won in two tight sets 6-4, 6-4; Sammie Tran and Anna Elbener won a thriller that went the distance 6-2, 6-7, 7-5; and Yerae Seo and Kira Thurman won 7-6, 6-0.
Bothell girls’ golf falls to Newport
The Cougar girls’ golf team fell to a tough Newport squad at Wayne Golf Course in Bothell on Monday, 243-281.
Leading the way for Bothell was junior Makenzie Kruger with a 53, followed by Gabi Darr’s 54 and senior Grace Park’s 57.
State returner Nicole Lomax for the Knights led all scorers with a 45.
Eastlake shuts out Inglemoor soccer to end regular season
The Viking boys’ soccer team ended the 2011 regular season with a 2-0 shutout at home on Tuesday night at the hands of the league-leading Eastlake Wolves.
The Vikings ended up in a tie for sixth place in 4A Kingco with Redmond at 4-4-2 (5-8-2), and will open up the 4A Kingco Tournament on Saturday.
The Bothell Cougars finished their season at 1-8-1 (2-9-2).
