Bothell community invited to Cascadia College’s Human Rights Awareness Week

Cascadia College in Bothell invites community members to take part in its annual Human Rights Awareness Week which takes place at the college’s Bothell campus from Feb. 6-9. This year’s focus is on “Crossing Borders”.

“In the wake of (President) Donald Trump’s election and recent immigration ban, human rights groups around the world have expressed alarm. The threat of massive human rights violations may be looming in our immediate future,” said Lindsay Custer, PhD, Cascadia faculty member and chair of the college’s Global Education Committee which is responsible for programming the Human Rights Awareness Week. “We hope this event can be a space for our community to come together and engage in meaningful dialogue on these topics.”

The events include an art exhibit, panel discussions, films, and speakers, and explore different aspects of immigration from human trafficking and domestic labor to the refugee crisis and amnesty.

Featured speaker David Fenner, a member of Humanities Washington’s speaker bureau, will take participants on a 200,000 year journey as he examines human migration from our beginnings in Africa to present day. Fenner’s talk looks at the push and pull factors that have sparked human migration. He will speak from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Feb. 7 in Mobius Hall on the Cascadia campus.
