Some love songs and splashes on Valentine’s Day/Around Town

This morning’s swim exercise program at the Northshore YMCA’s pool began per usual, on time, at 9 a.m. With the shallow-end folks exercising to boom-box music and the deep-end swimmers working their legs, arms, abs while socializing, the place quickly turned to four “suits” walking on the deck, past the lifeguard and heading for the shallow end.

Four men, decked out in black suits sporting bright red ties, motioned for silence as a YMCA staff member turned off the boom box. Then it happened….the most melodic, harmonious songs came from these Fab Four as they filled the room with barber-shop quartet love songs, performed to perfection.

After the third song, one singer asked, “Which one is Amy?”

With a bewildered Amy raising her hand, her husband Bob (the only man in the entire pool — who hangs out with the deep-enders!) met Amy in the shallow end, sporting a huge hug for her.

We swimmers were convinced that the YMCA had hired the crooners to entertain us on Valentine’s Day, but when we saw that Bob Austin had taken this thoughtful task into his own hands, we greeted him back in the deep end with the appropriate deluge of splashes.

Nice job, Bob! Who can top that!
