The school board has approved North Creek as the name of the comprehensive high school that will open in the fall of 2017.
North Creek was the top choice of the High School Grade Reconfiguration Task Force from the names submitted by community members in a two-step survey process.
“North Creek High School emerged as the clear choice in the naming process, and the board is delighted to unanimously support our community’s recommendation,” Northshore School Board President Janet Quinn said.
North Creek represents both geographic and historic significance in our local area. The new high school will be located in the North Creek area of Bothell. North Creek and its watershed have become significant focal points for preserving and restoring the historical ecology of our Northwest region.
North Creek is also the name of one of the oldest schools in the area’s history. North Creek School District No. 23 was established in 1887. Its first one-room schoolhouse, North Creek, served students until 1900 when a larger school was built on the same site. The old schoolhouse was moved to Centennial Park and is currently under restoration.
“North Creek provides wonderful historic and geographic links to the area it will serve,” Northshore School District Superintendent Larry Francois said. “Having a name makes the school come alive and begins to establish a unique identity within our community. It’s a very exciting milestone.”
The High School Grade Reconfiguration Task Force reviewed results from the online survey and recommended three names, in order of priority, for school board consideration: North Creek, Tambark and Pacific Crest.
“The board is grateful to our community for the thoughtful input we received, and we appreciate the work of the Grade Reconfiguration Task Force and administration in the naming process,” Quinn said.
