As Kenmore’s rebuilding of State Route 522 continues, construction crews closed Northeast 181st Street just east of 68th Avenue Northeast starting April 22.

The closure will last until late June, according to the city.

During the closure, the crews will remove the traffic signals at the intersection, putting in place a three-way stop in order to keep traffic moving.

When the intersection reopens in June, a four-way stop will be in place. Traffic signals are not expected to be operational once more until September.

Local access for businesses and residents on Northeast 181st will remain open from 73rd Avenue Northeast. Businesses on Northeast 181st east of 68th Avenue will remain open during construction. Customers are encouraged to access these businesses via 73rd Avenue. The only exception to this route will be for the Big Top Car Wash, which still will have access from 68th Avenue.

During construction, detours will be in place and flaggers will guide vehicles and pedestrians through the work area. Lanes on 68th Avenue may be limited to one lane in each direction at certain times, but the city said such closures will not occur during peak traffic times.

The city also has announced some new overnight work on SR 522 between 73rd Avenue Northeast and 83rd Place Northeast. On April 27, crews should have started putting down a final overlay on that stretch of the road. Initially, work will include several nights of pavement preparation to level the base layer. Crews will then work one lane at a time to pave the roadway. Paving will move from the outermost lanes inward and will meet at the center lane.

Pavement overlay of 80th Avenue Northeast and 83rd Place Northeast is scheduled to start this week. Once complete, the city’s project team anticipates several evenings of adjustments to complete the overlay work.

The city said that while methods to reduce construction noise will be used, noise from the various construction sites should be expected.
