Viking Classic tees off for schools

Dinner and golf — Jim Carey feels it’s an ideal way to bring the Kenmore community together. In other words, it’s a hole-in-one.

Carey, a local resident with two children attending Northshore schools, is helping put together The Viking Classic, a schools fund-raiser set for Oct. 12-13 at Inglewood Golf Club. Carey’s group is focusing on benefitting Inglemoor High, Northshore Junior High and Kenmore Junior High.

“Dollars are dwindling are far as state funding. This is a start to get something done for area schools — this is something we can build on,” Carey said. “We’ve got to do something.”

Carey noted that the event, which is already loaded with sponsors, is meant to not only highlight schools, but the community, as well.

“We’ve got Bastyr University … all this good stuff here, why can’t we have more?” he asked. “We’re trying to bring the community, businesses and government together. We know that we live in a ‘jewel’ here.”

Carey and company’s goal is to raise $100,000 at the event, but he added that they wouldn’t mind reaching the $300,000 mark.

Holding the event at the 90-year-old Inglewood Golf Club is a bonus, Carey said, because some folks have never played the members-only course.
