Playing in the regional finals of the 4A state tournament at Kent Memorial Park on Saturday night, the Bothell Cougars baseball team delivered a 5-2 victory over No. 10 Edmonds-Woodway to earn a spot in the state semifinals at Cheney Stadium next weekend against Richland at 7 p.m. The winner will advance to the state championship game against either Redmond or Jackson.

Bothell’s victory was led by a terrific effort from senior lefthander Henry Baillargeon, as he scattered six hits for two runs over 6-2/3 innings of work, with Brian McAfee, who started earlier in the day during the Cougars’ 7-1 win over Federal Way, coming on for the save.

Offensively, it was another upperclassman, Dain Gilbert, who came through with the game-winning RBI single in the sixth.

McAfee, who went a combined 4-for-5 in the two regional games, and fellow senior Kevin McShane notched RBI doubles in the win.

In their state opener against the Eagles, Bothell cruised to a 7-1 win with McAfee hurling a four-hitter while striking out five.

Bothell also guaranteed at least a tie of its best finish in program history, which was fourth in 2007, and with a win on Friday night, will play in its first state championship game.
