In Cedar Park Christian’s final boys regular-season basketball game last week, the Eagles fought hard but Overlake stormed the second quarter with more than 10 points to leave with a 54-50 win.
Senior Brandon Duffy compiled 11 points while senior Ethan Gutheil and junior Tommy McCullough followed closely with 10 points each.
This loss placed Cedar Park with a 6-6 conference record and an 8-12 overall record. Cedar Park participated in the league playoffs against Overlake Feb. 17, after the Reporter’s deadline. The Eagles had to win in order to play in districts.
• In Cedar Park girls’ basketball action, it was a battle to the end during Tuesday’s game against Overlake. The Eagles kept their endurance up and scored 21 points in the first quarter. Unfortunately, they left with a heartbreaking 45-43 defeat. Mattie Shelford took center court with 19 points and Brittany Kragerud added 15 points.
On Thursday, Cedar Park overpowered Forest Ridge from the first whistle. With a whopping 56-28 victory, the Lady Eagles, coaches and fans were exuberant. Sophomore Mikaela Rashick delivered the most action on the court with 20 points. Shelford followed with 14 points and junior Anna Brown added nine points.
Unfortunately, Cedar Park was unable to keep their endurance alive against Bellevue Christian on Friday. Though Shelford scored 26 points, more than anyone on the court, the Eagles as a whole could not withstand Bellevue Christian’s tactics. Rashick contributed 10 points in the 64-39 loss.
Even though the Eagles lost, they still have an opportunity to go to state. They played Overlake Feb. 17 to decide who will move on to districts.
4A Kingco
Inglemoor High senior guard Benji Bryant had another big game as the Vikings rallied in the fourth quarter, scoring 22, in a 59-50 win at home Friday night against Lake Washington High in a regular-season basketball finale.
The story of the game was the second quarter, when the Vikings turned up their offense and defense, pouring in 14 as a team while limiting the Kangaroos to just three points.
The Vikings’ Adam McElwee finished with 16 and Todd Campbell added 15.
Lake Washington’s Spencer Wozeniak led the Kangaroos with 18 points.
With the win, Inglemoor finished the regular season winning the Crown division at an impressive 12-4 in 4A Kingco league play (15-5 overall) and played Bothell in the first round of the 4A Kingco playoffs on Tuesday night at home, after the Reporter’s deadline.
Bryant finished the season leading the league in total points with 332, and ended up third in scoring average with 16.6 points per game.
• Senior point guard Alex Nelson continued her torrid scoring pace during Inglemoor’s final 4A Kingco league basketball game against Lake Washington, scoring 20 in a 38-33 Viking win.
Great defense by Inglemoor held the Kangs to just five points in the first and third quarters, which proved to be the difference in the game.
For the Vikings, Brynn Hamel added eight, and Nelson has been averaging 16.4 points per game over her last five games, four of them Viking wins.
Inglemoor (11-5, 15-5) will match up against Garfield in the first round of the 4A Kingco playoffs, which will take place at home on Wednesday night.
• The perennially powerful Inglemoor swim team shone at Saturday’s Sea-King 4A District Championships at Juanita High, finishing second with 260 points in the field of 12 teams.
Inglemoor only trailed Garfield, which snuck by with 268.5 points.
The Vikings earned four gold medals during the competition.
First, it was the team of Kyle Bogusz, Sam Billett, Luke Swenson and Craig Olynyk taming the field in the 200-yard medley relay with a state-qualifying time of one minute, 41.57 seconds. This same lineup went on to capture the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:31.67, also a state-qualifying mark, beating a talented Redmond team by exactly one second.
Then, Kyle Komiodi swam a lightning-fast 53.25 in the 100-yard butterfly to lap the field and then won the 100-yard backstroke in 53.12, edging out teammate Olynyk by a little over half a second.
