Inglemoor High 152-pound phenom Daniel Nelson made a great run at the 4A Washington State Mat Classic XXI Championships last weekend at the Tacoma Dome, settling for a fifth-place finish.

Nelson, a senior that went 0-2 at state last year, earned two first-round pins on Friday against Tahoma’s Zach Schuessler and Gig Harbor’s Davey Browne before falling to the eventual champion George King of Lake Stevens in the quarterfinals.

Nelson then lost a tight 11-7 decision against Graham Davis from Auburn and was able to pin Zeke Nistrian of Thomas Jefferson in just 42 seconds to win the fifth/sixth place final.

Heavyweight Travis Bogard (285) beat Foss High’s Antoine Paige in the opening round and then was shut out by Bryant Dickerson of Arlington, 11-0, in the second round.

In the loser’s bracket, Bogard won one before losing a grueling 4-3 battle against Kentwood’s Nathan Herrick, and then bounced back to overpower Heritage (Vancouver) senior Steven Forgette in the seventh/eighth final, 11-1.
