Bothell High junior Brandon Davidson had a field day at the 4A Region II wrestling tournament last Saturday at Rogers High in Puyallup, sweeping the 152-pound bracket to earn a No. 1 seed to the 4A state meet, the Mat Classic, this weekend at the Tacoma Dome.
Davidson began his run with a third-round pin of Graham-Kapowsin’s Cameron Tiegs in 4 minutes, 37 seconds, and then defeated Cayle Williams of Emerald Ridge 5-3 before beating Todd Beamer standout Lance Gibson in a tight 3-1 final match.
For Inglemoor, a total of five wrestlers placed in the top five in their brackets and will advance on to the state tournament.
Wrestling at 120, Mitchell Barker came back from his 13-10 first-round defeat to defeated Bethel’s Austin Alexander in the 5th/6th final, 5-3, to secure his state berth.
At 138, junior Gabe Seward led off with a 10-7 win over Brandon Brenenstahl of Rogers before falling into the consolation bracket, where he won two straight, 17-7 and then 14-5 over Aron Set-Heit of Todd Beamer to place third.
Senior Sam Gastineau, at 170, pinned Curtis High’s Spencer Nhem in 2:28, and after losing a close semifinals bout 8-6, Gastineau rebounded with a pair of wins, 7-3 and 4-2 again over Nhem in the finals, to place third.
Also placing third was junior Josh Koukal, who achieved a late pin in the first round over Spanaway’s Raul Veliz (5:48), and came through with a clutch 3-1 win over Roosevelt’s Garrett Mack in the consolation semifinals to punch his ticket to state.
Koukal also placed third after pinning Beamer freshman K.J. Skannal in the finals.
Rounding out the Vikings’ four third-place finishers was Ben Carson, wrestling at 220, who went 3-1 at Regionals, including a pair of close 7-5 and 5-2 wins in the consolation bracket.
The 24th edition of the Mat Classic gets underway this Friday at 10 a.m., with the finals beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
