I recently received a campaign mailer from Northshore School Board candidate Kimberly D’Angelo. The mailing included the fact that D’Angelo works for Northwest University, which is affiliated with the Assemblies of God church. I was curious as to what the requirements are to work at Northwest University. So I went to the school’s website and checked.

All employees must agree to the university’s statement of faith, community affirmation statement, statement of principles and to “refrain from any unscriptural conduct in their lives.” They must agree that the spiritual objectives of the university must be reflected in the personal lives of its employees.

To work at Northwest University, D’Angelo has to agree with the university’s statement of principles, which state, in part: The Bible is the inspired and only infallible and authoritative written word of God and since scripture is the infallible rule for faith and conduct, the Bible will always be the authority in all matters pertaining to personal and corporate behavior; and that God has expressly condemned sexual intercourse outside of marriage, and, because God’s order intends the sexual relationship to be between male and female, to homosexual practice.

Northwest University and its employees “seek to relate biblical Christianity to every area of life.”

I have no doubt that this candidate would do that in her work as a public school board director. Is that what we want for our public schools? Our schools have a mission to help all students, without regard to their religious beliefs or sexual orientation. I will be voting for the other candidate.
