Herbig’s vision is wrong for Kenmore | Letter

Kenmore Council candidate Nigel Herbig is wrong for Kenmore and does not belong on the city council.

Kenmore Council candidate Nigel Herbig is wrong for Kenmore and does not belong on the city council.

We received his campaign mailer attacking Kenmore’s working waterfront, and by implication, the family wage jobs it produces. The waterfront actually manufactures things and is home to iconic Kenmore Air.

Instead, Mr. Herbig wants to “open up” the waterfront – referring to the waterfront property as “ours.” It’s not “ours.” It belongs to Kenmore Air and the other longtime businesses that rely on the waterfront to provide goods, services and jobs.

Mr. Herbig is short on specifics, so it’s not clear if he wants the city to condemn the property and take it off our tax rolls, or just redevelop it into low-wage retail and restaurants, or maybe some high-end condos with “open space.”

Kenmore should be proud of its working waterfront. We don’t need to try to become a Kirkland-lite or shadow-Edmonds. The city has challenges enough with Kenmore Village. Neither it, nor the voters, need the added challenges Mr. Herbig would bring to office.
