Rockers Brier Rose, featuring Cedar Park Christian graduates Nate Gemmet (drums), Michael Rath (guitar), Nick Taylor (vocals/bass) and Riley Taylor (vocals/guitar/piano), will perform Feb. 21 at Sound Off!, a battle-of-the-bands competition at the Experience Music Project/Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame (EMP/SFM) at Seattle Center. The line up will be determined by a random drawing the day of the concert. Julie Fowlis closes her eyes, gently swings both arms and lets the Gaelic words rapidly roll off her tongue. Just what she’s singing about maybe only a few folks in the audience know, but the vocalist’s performance in a video clip from the Later with Jools Holland show in 2007 is equal parts intense, frolicsome and mesmerizing.

Grammy Award-winning bluesman James “Superharp” Cotton will take the stage at the Northshore Performing Arts Center (18125 92nd Ave. N.E., Bothell) at 7 p.m. Jan. 25. Celebrating his 65th year in entertainment, Cotton has been inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, is featured at the Smithsonian Institute and is the winner of countless W.C. Handy Blues Awards. In the course of his career, he has shared the stage with B.B.King, the Rolling Stones, Johnny Winter, the Allman Brothers, Santana, Bonnie Raitt, Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead and more. The Shanks, a Northwest blues trio, will open the show. Tickets are $30 for adults, $25 for seniors and $15 for those under age 25.
