Bothell stuns Newport, 9-7, in 4A Kingco baseball playoffs/ Prep Roundup

The Bothell High baseball team overcame a boatload of mistakes and a five-run deficit to stun Newport High, 9-7, in the first round of the 4A Kingco Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Although Newport was held to just three hits in the game, walks, hit-by-pitches and six fielding errors allowed the Knights to score early and often.

Down 7-2 in the bottom of the sixth, the Cougars rallied for six runs while the bullpen closed down the Knights for the win.

Junior Brian McAfee had a huge game, coming on to earn the save in the seventh while going 3-for-4 at the plate including a home run, double and two RBIs.

Left fielder Gene Watson and catcher Geoffrey Watson each notched two hits in the game.

With the win, the Cougars were to take on Redmond in the semifinals Monday night at Woodinville High.

UPSETS VIKINGS

Skyline starter Connor Lawhead pitched a gem for the Spartans, going the distance and allowing just one run in their 5-1 upset victory over Inglemoor, which took a league-best 14-2 record into the playoffs.

Inglemoor was to take on Woodinville Monday afternoon at its home turf of Valhalla.

POUNDS ROOSEVELT

The Inglemoor High fastpitch team got a solid start from Rosie Matsumoto and plenty of offense in a 10-3 win over Roosevelt on Friday night at Inglemoor High.

Matsumoto went the distance, scattering eight hits for three runs while striking out nine Roughrider batters and walking just one.

On offense, Kylie Acacio and Kaylee Hardin each banged out two hits, both of Hardin’s going for extra bases, while Matsumoto helped her own cause with a double and run scored.

With the win, the Vikings improved to 11-3 on the season and have the second-best record in the league behind Woodinville (12-1).

EASTLAKE OUSTS COUGARS in soccer

The Bothell boys soccer team was knocked out of the 4A Kingco playoffs after a tough 2-1 overtime loss to the Wolves on Saturday night at Bothell High.

Eastlake’s Nick Rudella opened up the scoring, finishing to Bothell goalie Shane Lervold’s right off a feed from Sean Klauer in the 16th minute.

With less than four minutes remaining in the game, the Cougars got a clutch equalizer from Brandon Rise and Alan Villavicencio as Rise flew down the right flank and crossed to Villavicencio, who slammed a header into the upper-right corner of the goal.

In overtime, Eastlake’s Sawyer Preston scored unassisted on a loose ball that Bothell failed to clear, ending the Cougars’ season.

Bothell finished the year at 7-3-1 in league play and 9-4-3 overall.

NORTHSHORE LACROSSE FALLS TO LAKESIDE

The visiting Northshore lacrosse squad could not contain Lakeside standout Sten Jernudd in a 16-12 Boys Division I loss to the Lions on Friday night at Lakeside School.

Jernudd scored six goals, notched two assists and swept up 11 ground balls in the game as Northshore dropped to 9-5-0 in the division.

For Northshore, the Wisman brothers, Taylor and Foster, scored four goals each to pace the offense.

INGLEMOOR TENNIS SWEEPS ROOSEVELT

The Vikings did not give up a set on Thursday afternoon in a 4A Kingco tennis match against Roosevelt, winning 7-0.

Maria Gonzalez-Cuervo, playing at No. 1, beat Hallie Martin, 6-0, 6-2; No. 3 Katie Coles finished off Miriam Bronstein in a tough second set, 6-0, 6-4; and No. 2 singles Jasmine Singh and No. 4 Leanne Thim both swept their matches, 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles action, the teams of Meg Linder/Ellie Tanaka (6-3, 6-3), Erin Bankaitis/McKayla Dear (6-2, 6-2) and Jasmine Foruzani/Audrey Wu (6-2, 6-0) each won their matches in straight sets.
